Black Lives Matter: Our statement

By: Hina Haider

Black Lives Matter originated in 2013 after the murder of Trayvon Martin. The movement may only be a few years old, but the sentiment is not. The movement is historically momentous in raising awareness to racial injustice and police brutality. The goal is to call out systemic racism and structures of white supremacy and act as a sign of solidarity for those who have been victims of injustice. The ongoing history of oppression continues to afflict black and brown communities. Time and time again, the systems currently in place reveal that it is not designed for marginalized groups, and we see the repercussions of this. Our news articles are filled with stories of those killed or brutalized for the color of their skin, and there are still some that fly under the radar. It is our duty to call out injustice as we see it and to advocate for those still facing oppression and inequality.
