A Working Glossary

Ally: A person who uses their privilege to advocate and work in solidarity with oppressed groups
Oppression: The combination of social inequality and power that are present on an individual, institutional, and cultural level.
Prejudice: A judgment or belief, targeted towards a group of people, that are based on generalizations or stereotypes.
Discrimination: Disadvantageous treatment of a certain group based on race, gender, or other characteristics
Intersectionality: Acknowledging different identities and experiences in the discourse of activism
Microaggressions: A comment or action that communicates negative messages about a person’s identity
Cultural Appropriation: The theft of cultural elements without understanding or respect for the original culture
Color-blind racism: The view that racial prejudice does not exist and everyone has equal opportunities, ignoring the hardships that people face due to racism.
