  1. Must be a citizen of the United States

  2. Must be a resident of Illinois and of your election precinct at least 30 days before the election

  3. Must be at least 18 years old on or before the election

  4. May not be serving a sentence of confinement in any penal institution as a result of a conviction of any crime 

  5. May not claim the right to vote anywhere else 

Online voter registration

  1. Use the Illinois online voter application 

  2. This application is  offered only in some states including Illinois

  3. An Illinois driver’s license or ID and a Social Security number are required for online voter registration

  4. Registration is open until Sunday, October 18, 2020. 


By mail registration

  1. Print the National Voter Registration Form

  2. Same requirements as online voter registration

  3. Box 6 ID number- If you lack an Illinois driver's licenses write the last four digits of your social security number on the form. However, if you have neither an Illinois driver’s license nor social security card mark “none” on the form and you will receive a unique identifier granted by the state. In this case, you must send a piece of identifying information with the registration form in the form of current and valid photo identification, a copy of a current utility bill, bank statement, paycheck, or other information that shows the name and address of the voter.

  4. Send the completed form to your local election official

  5. The form must be postmarked by Tuesday, October 6, 2020

Voting by mail

  1. Request mail-in ballot with a mail ballot application

  2. Fill out the ballot and send it to your local election office

  3. The deadline to request a ballot by mail is Thursday, October 29, 2020
